Hello,
Subject car is displaying transmission service required and anti-skid service required messages/lights. The vehicle is also always in 4th gear. If switched to manual mode 2nd can be selected but thats it. This has been described to me as limp mode.
I cant remember the specific codes, but there was a vehicle speed sensor code on the OBD. I am going to scan the codes again soon and try to be more specific.
Much Of the research that i have done suggests a complicated reltionship between control modules and sensors that can cause the car to go into limp mode. I have gone through and check the connections on the TCM and other various sensors and modules. What are common problems that can cause the car to go into limp mode?
In addition to the alerts and limp mode there is also an intermittent high pitched whistling sound coming from the engine compartment.
If anyone can suggest a good starting point for troubleshooting i would greatly appreciate it!!

Maybe a problem with the speed sensor ? Try a google search with "volvo s40 speed sensor forum"
May even be more than just one issue. The anti-skid message may be caused by a cracked reluctor ring or a slack axle center bolt

thanks for your reply. I have been trying to test the wheel speed and vehicle speed (on transmission) sensors, but I am having problems finding a good spec for resistance. I checked all of the wheel speed sensors and they all read infinite resistance. Everything I have seen online for these two-wire type sensors suggests a resistance of 800-1500 Ohms. I checked 3 of the 4 wheel sensors and they all read infinite. there are 2 sensors (vehicle speed and something else) on the transmission. I checked resistance on those and they were reading around 5.7 MOhms. Do you know of a better way to verify any of these sensors (aside from buying new ones)
thanks again!
thanks again!
