Glue for sunroof metal rails

Post by jsloden »

I am looking at gluing the metal rails back onto the front and rear edges of the sunroof. Is there anyone out there that has done this before and can tell me what the proper bonding material would be for this?

Thanks

Had same problem on 2001 V70. Both rods bent a little when they popped so no gluing.. Dealer had no fix except replacement, said they'd tried epoxies to no avail. Watching eBay auctions for a replacement, I noticed most offerings lacked one or both of the strips. I noticed in auction pictures that the shape and configuration of the strips was apparently changed in a later model year. I lucked into a newer glass for about $100, and swapped it out myself.
I think for success you'll need to remove the panel from the car, use a strip of iron or wood to spread the pressure (contours of the strips make even pressure difficult)and a whole bunch of spring clamps. I'd probably try JB Weld, but whatever you use it should completely set/cure before the glass is reinstalled.
The problem is the contours make the strips into little leaf springs. I think too they probably expand and contract differently than the perimeter frame around the glass. They're compressed when the sunroof is closed. Might be easier all around to find a later replacement glass with updated strips attached. Good luck.
