I mean... just turn the engine sideways (longways?), switch out everything inside the block with new stuff, replace the drivetrain, make it rear wheel drive, replace everything outside the block, put a semi truck turbo on it, swap out the ECU...

The best bang for the buck is what I did to my 2001 V70 T5; a 2001-2002 LPT 2.4l engine mated with bigger T5 turbo and the T5 ECU is a perfect low budget power boost. Perhaps an engine from a 2003-2006 XC90 or 2003-2007 XC70?? The later engines have exhaust and intake VVT which can be left alone in your case. Just time them to the furthest clockwise point upon timing belt fitment. To avoid wear in the VVTs you could open them up and have an engineer weld the internals. This would prevent end-play and oil leaks.

In your case just put in a T5 turbo with associated plumbing (best to remove the engine for this) and T5 ECU for the engine.
The high compression engine from your XC (9 to 1 as opposed to 8.5 to 1) will give great bottom end and a good top end on premium fuel without detonation. Being a 1998 model you'll have zero problems with matching the engine computer to the car (unlike the 1999 and up models)

This combo will have more power than a 1998 V70R AWD due the the engine being higher compression and it will be noticeably smoother due to being from a later generation if you get one of the later engines.

Everything will be stock so part replacement will be a breeze.

I haven't seen any transmission kits that stop the Aisin auto transmissions from self-imploding whether they are the 4 or 5 speed. Manual transmission is the key here.
