P80 P2 Dipstick 9497557 Foibles - Abscate Tech Tip #666

Post by abscate »

I just broke my third dipstick on my Volvos - so the tip is..

Anytime you are fussing around the front of the intake manifold, remove your dipstick

The good news is now that I have three broken ones, I have to figure out a repair strategy

You have to upgrade your dipstick tube as the old one is NLA - or recalibrate your dipstick - discussed here

If you don't succeed repairing it a brand new Chinese one is 2.20$

While removing the over the engine pipe during the ETM replacement last week I broke the plastic handle on my dipstick. Epoxy has held it together but still just ordered 4 of these cheap dipsticks from China.

As long it's the correct length for measuring oil and the O-rings seal the tubing it'll suit my needs.

How can you pass on that?? It's got TWO o-rings and it says ENGINE on it. You're mad, man. :D

Looks like it says ENGINE on one side and MOTOR on the other. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me... ;-)
What if you put in engine oil instead of the proper motor oil?

I’ll fab an epoxy and wire fix. That will be even cheaper than the Chinese one.

$2? I get lunch cheaper than that around back of the Burger King

I've got a cheap substitute dipstick on my 2001 V70 T5. Every 12 months I replace the o rings to prevent it popping up.....no big deal.

If your dipstick keeps popping up, is it possible you have high internal engine backpressure and are due for a "PCV system" maintenance :?:

Gotta keep those 2001 V70 T5's running... :)

I broke the red handle off the dipstick again and also cracked the darn plastic RAD drain plug.

I checked on the dipstick order status and it hasn't even shipped from China yet. I'll just keep using epoxy until it arrives. Tomorrow I'll pick up the RAD drain plug at a local Volvo Dealer for $6.
