1999 V70XC sounds like VW beetle and vibrates heavily at low revs

Post by jvl »

As the title suggests, having a problem that concerns me.
Drove 50km to go visit a friend, no problems.
Drove 50km back home, and while parking up I had to manouver on a slight incline.
The car started vibrating quite heavily both under load (D, R) and also when unloaded (N) at lower revs (between approx 900 and 1300).

When revving it gently/slowly, it kind of sounds like a VW beetle in the 900-1300 rpm range. Higher revs sound normal.

What could this be? Exhaust? Valves? Timing belt slipped?

Thanks,

Joost

Check engine mount under the crank pulley on RHS of engine. Might have separated. Also check the upper and lower torque bushes have not split.

Neil.

Yep...i agree with Neil...as for the beetle sound...check exhaust for split somewhere.

Thanks both!

I have replaced all engine mount and torque mounts already, except the lower left one (the adjustable one).
The shaking I described really seems to go along with the weird sound.

I was thinking exhaust as well (will check today), but here is another theory, could both sound and shaking be caused by lack of fuel?
My fuel pump has been making noise since I got the car. I've not measured fuel pressure yet, but noticed recently that the car needs a slightly longer crank sometimes. I was on a slight incline yesterday (front end facing up) so was thinking maybe the fuel pump is giving in and is unable to supply sufficient pressure.

Another theory, since it only happens at low revs: torque converter or ignition components?

Thanks again, any input welcome!

Just did a readout and it's misfiring on cylinder #2.

I guess I should start out by changing out plugs and coils from one cylinder to another to see if it starts misfiring on another cylinder?
Could this still be caused by low fuel pressure?

You can rule out fuel pressure by measuring it, but I would say with 95% confidence that fuel pressure isn't your problem. It sounds very ignition to me

Just swapped out coil 2 and 3 and reset the code.
Will order 5 plugs anyhow and maybe a coil also.
2 out of 5 have been replaced since I bought the car, the other 3 look OEM.

I initially read:
"Drove 50km to go visit a friend, no problems.
Drove 50km back home, and while parking up I had to manouver on a slight incline. "

as

"Drove 50k miles to go visit a friend, no problems.
Drove 50k miles back home, and while parking up I had to manouver on a slight incline."

and thought "Well, there's your problem right there..... " :D

Since swapping coils from #2 to #3 and vice versa, I now get a misfire code on #3 instead of #2. So I guess that coil is faulty! Will order a new coil and 5 plugs. Will update when done for future forum visitors.

Put in a new coil on #3 and 5 new plugs.
It now runs fine!

Next up: the leaky exhaust...
