Interesting reading this thread- had the same squealing noise for a few years now.
However, no issue with oil changing colour between oil changes, oil spraying or poor performance- just the annoying squealing.
After reading this thread, I did, however, give a little tug on the dipstick, and sure enough there was suction pressure, and then the car started to idle roughly. Similar to the two queries I recently posted, I seem to just becoming accepting of the fact that a 2001 extremely faithful vehicle with almost 500,000 k on it might not last for ever. It's status recently changed from "main" car to "winter beater".
Certainly, with-out a great deal of insight and advice from this forum, it may have gone to the bone yard some time ago!

Very helpful! Pointed right where my problem was. Regarding replacement dyaphram only, the VW 2.5 peze i5 has a similar vent system and the dyaphram looks identical. I was able to pick one up for around $15. The package included the dyaphram and snap on single use cover for the valve housing.

Available at Parts Geek, Rock Auto etc. The cover is not compatible however as far as I can tell the dyaphram is.
