Is the battery indicator light working when turning the ignition on with engine not running? This would be when several other lights on the instrument panel are lit.

This is where I am at with the whole charging issue. As long as I polarized my alternator( I take a wire with an alligator clip on each end, with the car running I clamp one clip to positive battery and touch the other clip to the bolt closest to the edge of the alternator and then my alternator starts charging my battery and everything works great). However, if I do not do that the alternator shows it is not putting out anything.
Any clues ???

The alternator needs the battery warning light to work. The battery indicator light should come on along with all the other warning lights on the instrument cluster with key on/ engine not running.

Ok so here is the weird thing sometimes my battery warning light and my bulb warning light stay on all the time, and then sometimes those two just come on when I press on my brakes and as soon as I take my foot off the brake padel warning lights go off. Also, don't know if this would have anything to do with this problem, but my ABS warning light has been on as well.
All input is welcomed and very much appreciated as I am at my wits ends trying to figure this out.
Thank you to all

Lummert thank you -
I just went out and checked and these are the warning lights that come on- Check engine, service, Oil, Brake, Parking Brake, and ABS.
Then I guess the answer to your question would be no. The battery warning light does not come on when I turn my key over without starting my car. However, as I stated before sometimes when I am driving the car my battery and bulb warning lights stay on. Other times those two warning lights only come on when I press down on my brake pedal. Which I have always thought that is weird. But, I am just a woman so my roommate brushes that off like it couldn't have anything to do with the problem.
