05 XC70 front axle bolts 30640878

Post by greg850r »

Hi all,

I have a new (to me) Cross Country. It came home with a center cap missing on LF and looking closer, no nut or bolt in center on the axle. I looked at the other side and there is a 14mm bolt, which is new to me as I have only 850s with the large nut on the axle. Since this is my first XC car I figure I have nothing in the bolt box to match, but found an 850 suspension bolt that was close and a washer that was similar. Did not like the way it felt when I started to tighten it so I looked on utube and found reference to a rubber spacer in the splined hole under the washer that I lack.

I wanted to see that part so I went to the other side and was surprised the bolt was not tight at all and I spun it out with my fingers. Underneath it there was no spacer and it sure looks like when the washer seats against the hub it's going to pull the splined axle shaft outboard a good half inch before it seats too. Can anyone point me to a parts diagram for this front hub?

Warning..those bolts are critical and don't drive the car without them replaced

You need two new bolts, part 30640878

About $6 each. They Torque to yield so they are single use.

Volvo parts Lisle has the diagram you seek, put your VIN in yo get the right diagram

Thanks, I wouldn't have known that. Do you know if the end of the axle winds up flush with the outer surface of the hub where the washer contacts it? They are both sitting 1/2" inboard of that location at present and I was afraid I was in need of some kind of spacer. I will ask about this at the dealer tomorrow when I get the bolts too but the Lisle website will not accept my VIN so I can't find a diagram.

I don't know if they have been that way for awhile but I suspect so. The crud in the splines looks like they didn't slide inboard that 1/2" recently. We bought the car from the 2nd owner and she had it serviced who knows where. 115,000 miles on the clock.

The bolt will pull the axle shaft flush, no spacer required. Double check you’re VIN ON Lisle as I’m not an expert on AWD Volvo. The new bolt thing is real, don’t look at the old boat and say “ it looks fine” Torque to yield “ bolts are stretched Just enough to go elastic to hold

Got it. I know you can't re-use those. FYI My wife just got back from Wisconsin where my son had a hockey tournament. 800 miles each way. I noticed the missing center cap on their return. It probably went away when the bolt knocked it out, so she did ?? miles without it. Given that the other bolt was backing out when I looked under the cap, plus the axles backing out of the hubs I'm surprised I didn't see an ABS malfunction from the sensor rings not being read. I bet the previous owner had some kind of front end service done and they re-used the bolts. 35nm translates to 29 Ft Lbs plus 90 degrees on new bolts and I should be able to let her have it on the road again by tomorrow.

Volvo does not. I do not. Your mileage may vary.

The OEM bolts from Volvo come with some form of Loctite already on the threads.

Totally forgot that. Another reason not to add anything more.

That 90 Degree turn will take a hefty pull with an 18 inch breaker, so it won't go anywhere if torqued to spec.

I just replaced the bolts on my car due to one side becoming loose. On my car the bolt hole was contaminated with grease from the outer CV joint. I had previously replaced the boot and repacked the CV joint and since the axle bolt hole goes through the outer CV joint into the cavity with grease new grease has pushed into the bolt hole. This time I cleaned the threads carefully before using the new bolts. The previous axle bolts were of questionable quality too, they came with a ball joint kit (not OEM) so my advice it stick with OEM parts for this job. With the loose axle bolt the car made a rhythmic chirping type sound above 20mph and it would change pitch when cornering. I thought it was the wheel bearing but in turned out to be the loose axle bolt on one side. It wasn't real loose but it sure wasn't torqued correctly.
