MAJOR gas leak!

Post by tj850GLT »

I just bought a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT yesterday, and I went to the gas station to fill her up today. After the pumped stopped pumping, I heard a weird noise. I looked under the car and noticed a MASSIVE amount of gas pouring out of the car. It probably let out about 1/2 a gallon or so. I haven't really looked at it yet, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the connection of the gas tank and the filler tube. Has anyone had a proble like this? I bought it from a dealer so I'm definatly going to give them a call in the morning! Just sucks, I feel like a dumped 2 bucks onto the ground :(.

Thanks for any advise, and any other tips on this car.

oh yah, the AC / REC lights blink sometimes when I start the car. What could that be?

thanks

Some Volvos have had a recall!Call a Volvo dealer and give them your VIN Remove the back seat bottom and remove the metal plate and you can see if the leak is at the pump gasket or related fittings.

Cool thanks for the replies.

I'm bringing it to the dealer I got it from tomorrow anyways. The REC and AC lights are also flashing when I start it, and the ABS and Trac off light came on today! Thank god that I got the car from a dealer and not a private sale! The ABS light only came on for a little bit, but I shut the car off, and the light hasn't come back on. Oh well, Ill tell them about that too.

My '95 850 leaks too. It leaks when I fill the tank up but if I fill it to 3/4 it's fine. I wonder if this problem pertains to the recall or if its another unrelated issue. The nearest dealer to me is over 70 miles away and I'd hate to drive all the way there for something that isn't covered. Any advice?

Well it turned out to be a hose above the tank that was cracked. He had it fixed for me, and the AC gets checked out at the dealer the middle of the week sometime.

Call the dealer with the VIN . They will answer over the phone about any open recalls.

Well it turned out to be a hose above the tank that was cracked.

Actually the hose between the tank inlet and the fill nozzles has a seal. The seal gets brittle and cracks. I temporarily stopped the spillage using silicone, but that is not a permanent fix. Need to find a replacement hose fitting.
If anyone knows where to get this, please post.
In the mean time, just fill up 3/4 ways. It is an over-fill spill problem that could be dangerous.
Where will you be in 100 years ?

Did you or anyone ever find where to get this hose?? My 850 does the same thing, it must be fairly high up, because usually when the pump auto stops it is fine, but if I try to top it off from there I wind up with a mess. Below are pictures, does this look like what others have had happen?
thanks,

You know that there was a recall on the 850 gas tank...actually up near the filler. Just check your VIN# at the dealer. If your car has never been repaired for the leak they'll still take care of it.
