Being in the mid 20s up here the last few days I couldn't heat up my garage to get the job done neither. With temp rising to the mid 40s you'll be fine this weekend.

Belts shrink when it's cold expand when it hot, that is what the tensioner compensates for. You might leave the belt in the house until the last minute, it will be expanded. Then let it sit on the engine for two hours before you adjust the tensioner. So that the tensioner and the belt will be at the same temperature.

This is clever. Not sure the 2 hour wait is necessary though. Are you assuming the tensioner responds differently to temp? Seems if you could heat up the belt and put it on quickly, then OK to at once adjust to the warm-belt tensioner mark.

Great idea alright! He already installed the timing belt. Since he now has to remove it might as well remove the tensioner also and get them both heated in the house.

The whole idea is to make it easier to get the belt on. Taking the tensioner off and into the house would be extra work and time with no advantage. Still need to let the belt and tensioner reach ambient temperature so that the tensioner will be adjusted correctly.

i plan on tackling it this weekend. i think i will be able to get everything to the right temp. i’ll have my kerosene heater right near the front passenger wheel well. plus it should get up to 40F this weekend. and we will be equilibrating for hours, doing rear brakes on my minivan too.

anyone know where i can get the shoulder bolt for the timing cover? i’ve searched online and found a bunch of diff bolts. will search again. i bought those hub o-rings that were recommended. they worked out great. thanks!!!

If you cannot dig that bolt up locally before finishing the timing belt then get a bolt and washer at a HW store.

M7x48.5

Pretty sure the thread pattern is 1.0mm as most other M7 Volvo bolts are.

Temps climbed up to 38 F so far today!

Hi XC70Rider. I have some questions about the instructions you listed.

1. Turn with 6mm allen key CCW to releive tension. Does it matter which position the Allen key hole starts in?
2. Turn with 6mm allen key CW past the middle to 2 O'clock to give tension. When you say 2 O'clock, do you mean the tension indicator is a 2 O'clock or the Allen key hole? I'm confused because in the video he is first talking about the Allen key hole, then I think switches to the tension indicator.
3. Turn with 6mm allen key CCW until tensioner indicator is back in the middle
4. Tighten Tensioner center bolt 20nm
