Here is a nice write up on the valve body removal. There are some short cuts, but this method is solid. If I recall correctly a forum member has recently provided a video on the matter.

Super Herman the problem with the tranny is that it had a very hard jerk going from 1st to 2nd and it's full of fluid. That's about it but it's not easy to ignore and I just need a little more time to get parts before I start cracking open the engine. And I don't think the engine is toast seeing as it ran with enough umph to get into a trailer with no smoke, knocks or other bad noises.

2005 2.3? Doesn’t sound right to me.

Must not have been from a 2005 then, according to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Modular_engine Last year of 2.3 was 2004. Not that it matters, just reporting what I know.

My father may have been misled and told that the whole engine had been swapped rather then maybe just the head or everything except the block? ( Don't really know how plausible that theory is....)

Totally plausible. We might be able to get some serial number data , can you share your carbuild date on the door sticker, and your VIN.
( check with folks first as some people don’t like putting VIn numbers on the Internet even though they are on your dash in public.
