Just picked up a 2007 Volvo S80 3.2L with 102K miles, when cold the shifts are very pronounced at medium acceleration. Car is in comfort setting, I have not attempted a comparison in Sport mode yet.
Seems to happen when cold, after a warm up the shifts smoothed out for the most part.
Gear mount?
Change Trans fluid? (unknown history) it is a one owner car.
Software upgrade?

First two are worth looking at with those miles - not sure on software. Fluid change - unless transmission is bad - is always a smart move if you plan on keeping the car.
