Thank you for the advice DrDan, this is a scary scenario! I know , i should have used a special tool and pass it on. Hopefully this work went fine for me, i have no play or noise afterward. I do work conscientiously and slow. I will chase for any leaks next time i look under the car.

Antoine, I just wanted to point out that those risks exist, and to my understanding, are the reason why the counterhold is recommended. I have no idea how likely the worst case outcome of not using a counterhold is. Maybe more experienced members can comment on that. Don't worry but maybe do keep an eye on it and let us know. I hope you'll report back with no news.

xHeart, I still have the tool, but I'm based in Germany and shipping cost and time are probably prohibitive, if it wasn't for that I would offer it to you. If it helps, I can post measurements, as it seems feasible to manufacture the tool in a not unrealistically well-equipped workshop.

Oh, by the way, the long black tool on the photo was a very affordable pick from ebay and also worked well to undo the old tie rod and to tighten the new one. You slide it over the tie rod completely and when turned, it locks and transfers torque.

Wow, the 9997019 is super expensive given that you can buy a functional equivalent of it for about 30 bucks on ebay.
9997020 though is nonstandard, not much/any choice on the market for this one.
I recall that, for other models (V40?), the same counterhold is used along with a spacer which compensates the smaller diameter of the rack. Is that the 9997021 spacer on your list?

Not even better here in Europe.
Peace of mind can get expensive very quickly.
For the Haldex, Angle gear repair and maintenance i am at 520€ of Volvo special tools, by chance half of them were bought second hand off eBay!! I have already loan a set of tools but someone has to buy them first. Still better than the dealer cost.

Adding various costs, age of steering gear, time to complete the job, and factoring in "what if" makes me wonder if replacing steering gear itself worthwhile with a 5-8 years outlook.

That would be taking it too far IMO! Replacing the tie rod is not a bad job, and apart from the two tools discussed above you don't need anything out of the ordinary to complete it. I considered renewing the pair of them, but here I am, more than one year later, and the other one is still fine and will be, who knows how long. Enough other stuff to fix or have fixed, though.

Definitely worth the job. The inner tie rods will last longer, i expect doing the outer tie rods in 40.000Km at the earliest.

I did followed the FCP video almost step by step.

A Volvo SMI rebuilt is available for $300 - it comes with inner tie rod?
My steering gear is just above 300,000km, will I get another 80,000km after the tie rod job?
