2009 S80 "Engine Temperature High"

The vehicle needs a scan tool attached when engine has cooled completely, overnight is best, and then turn on ignition and get initial temp and see if it is plausible. If it is 8 C out and that temp from ECT sensor is not accurate then that is the first issue. Also check ambient temp from ECM to see that it is also accurate. Then crank engine and watch ECT to see that it rises somewhat steady and see where it goes. When it gets to 90C or thereabouts the upper hose should be warm or hot indicating circulation. Also an IR temp "gun" can be used to see what the rad temp is in line of sight areas across its width. The new thermostat may be faulty.

Did you check the temperature as Jimmy suggested?

Looking at the Land Rover workshop manual for the same engine shows the following

This indicates that you are not get hot fast enough

See the post above from Rick (The temperature sensor for the outside air temp is behind the mirror glass as far as I know)

While you are waiting for the new scan tool verify the following

- Cold engine
- Turn on the engine let it idle
- turn off AC
- is the radiator fan running? It should be stopped
- how long does it take for the radiator fan to turn on

One last thing

Buy a coolant Hygrometer

If your radiator cap is defective then the engine could easily overheat a 50/50 mixture
