I double checked and the VIN matches. I’m pretty sure I have an I-6 and I just doubled checked the Carfax from when I bought it and it says I-6.
Sounds like the dealership just saw transmission codes and thought we’d go for a replacement which honestly seems idiotic.
Thanks everyone for your help. My other mechanic is looking at it tomorrow so I will update then.

I will leave the technical stuff for later once you update with what your "other mechanic" says.
On every modern car that is sold in the USA, on the radiator support or hood is an EPA sticker which will tell you which engine your car has. So if in doubt you can always look there. If it is missing the car had an accident.

Yeah mine is definitely an I-6.
Update from the second place looking at my Volvo: they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They've driven the car and no transmission related messages were showing when they started it up this morning. Everything seems to be fine.
He did recommend several different fluid flushes and is going to write them down for me when I pick the car up tonight. He said that this transmission probably needs a flush on a regular basis to keep it running properly. This place isn't comfortable with doing the flush so I am going to have to take it to yet another place that specializes in Volvos. He recommended taking it to a different Volvo dealer and give them a specific list of the services I want.
I think I'm still going to look for an independent mechanic from the database mentioned earlier in this thread. The next closest dealership is in the suburbs and I would prefer not to deal with that.

I was hoping he would get a second scan that would provide data that would enable me to ferret this out.precopster wrote: ↑13 Mar 2019, 16:15 That's odd because both models share the same TF-80SC transmission. Sounds more like a Vida reference glitch.

If vehicle profile is turned on and you select vehicle type THEN search does it give the same result?

I picked up my car yesterday and drove it home. It is definitely slipping every once in a while but only when going 10 mph or less so I am going to take it into another mechanic shop on Monday and have the transmission fluid flushed. He did say that it "could help or make it worse". Something about the shavings in the transmission but that didn't really make sense to me. Appointment is scheduled for Monday.
