Tailgate panel separating, what type of adhesive? Topic is solved

The outside panel on my 2001 V70’s tailgate is starting to separate and is rattling quite a bit. It appears to have been held together with adhesive, which I’m assuming is starting to deteriorate due to age. Anyone know what sort of adhesive should be used to seal this back up?

What type of bond needed?
1. Fiberglass to Metal.
2. Plastic to Metal.
3. Fiberglass to Plastic.
4. Fiberglass to Fiberglass.
5. Plastic to Plastic.

I believe it’s metal to metal.

Metal to Metal: J-B Weld. Then clean off the excess with with a little Acetone on a rag (Before it cures).

The entire tailgate is plastic except for the hinges. You'll need a plastic to plastic adhesive.

I took a magnet out to do some tests and it did not stick to the tailgate, so it looks like this is the case. I had no idea, clearly.*

Plastic to plastic adhesive it is. Does JB Weld make a good one or is there a better quality brand?

*To satisfy my curiosity, I tried the magnet out on all the painted exterior surfaces of the car, and it stuck to (metal assumed):
- roof
- side doors
- quarter panels

But did not stick to (plastic or nonferrous metal assumed):
- hood
- tailgate
- side mirror casings
- Bumper covers
- painted trim around cargo area windows

I'm not sure about brands but I'd probably use any available two component epoxy myself.

The cars body is steel so are front quarter panels and doors. Hood is made from aluminum. Other pieces of painted trim plastic all of it.

Tap them with your finger, there are distinctive difference sounds for Metal, Plastics and Fiberglass ..ect.

I ended up using this tan-colored plastic bonder from JB Weld:

It did the job, although it was harder to get into some of the spots that wouldn't open very wide. If I did it again, I would probably try to crack it open a bit wider so I could get a complete bead in all the way around. In any case, the rattle is gone and my ride is much quieter.

As a side benefit, this bonder dries to the same color as the interior trim on my V70, so I was able to use it to repair a few places where that trim has cracked! Nice.
