Fuel Pump and Alternator went at how many Miles?

Post by Svenska 850 Wagon »

Hey Guys, I usually try to be proactive with replacing things to keep it reliable. I always used to drive Honda's and it was easy when to predict failure. Fuel Pumps around 150 Miles, Aleternator 111 miles.

I have 155 Miles on my 1995 850 and I think both my Alternator and Fuel Pump are original. Can anyone remember when you replaced either of these?

Thanks
Chris

On my '93, the alternator was replaced before I bought it, but I have the receipt saying it was changed at about 125k. I just replaced the fuel pump recently and the car has 226k miles now.

Well my Fuel Pump died yesterday at 157Miles. I guess one question answered :o

Yesterday:

Would not start for my wife. She got it started after trying for 10 mins. Drove home for 45mins. Shut off. Then I tired sputtered and then it went totally dead. The car did it's job. Very considerate of the car really. It got her home and then decided to die. Replaced it today.

My 1993's fuel pump went at about 155k miles and I probably contributed to it dying quicker because of my recent experiments with seeing how far I could go on one tank of gas.

Haven't had to replace the pumps or the alternators on the others yet

I spoke to a Volvo mechanic who mentioned that people who always just put a little bit of gas in and and do not fill it up kill it earlier as well. This is because the pump runs hotter and does not have the gas to keep it cool (In hotter area's AZ, CALI, etc...) I am the 2nd owner so I have no idea what the last owners habits were. I only know that the car lived in Canmore in the Rockies so it was below freezing 6 months of the year. At least it stayed cool :D

That applies across the board to all cars with electric fuel pumps. I never let a car get below 1/4 tank unless it is real desperation. The fuel does keep the pump motor cooler.
