1998 volvo V90 engine swap

i just bought a '98 V90 with 280,000 miles. it was garaged and the owner was diligent with maintenance but its a worn out engine and needs to be replaced (no compression at all in 5 cyl.). does anyone know what other years and models of Volvos used the 6304S engine.? from my initial research, it's a 20hr job for an engine swap. id like to use a low milage engine that that can fit with the least fuss. thanking you in advance for any information.

Which year and model again, please?

Unless there is a GEN 1 version of the V90 from another market, Im confused.

96 to 98 exact match. 95 has some differences in ECT and instrument cluster coolant temp sensors and EGR. 92-94 have a different HP and torque so there is likely a cam lift or other changes that could cause some issues.

'95 was still 960 but face lifted 960(s,v90 look).
Rebadging from 960 to s,v90 was done from '96 to '98 including '98 as a last production year.
'92-'94 900 series were totally different looking cars.

Actually 97 1/2 and 98 were badged as 90 series earlier built 97 year were still badged 960 at least here in the States. Nice interior upgrade and increased ac btu were the most notable change in the S/V90 over the 960 badged cars. June

To answer the question I believe the 1995 onward engines will be a match. Strictly speaking if you swap out the sensors with your own on a 1995 you should be fine.

The notable difference is that they increased the timing belt width to 28mm (up from 25mm in the 1994 model) and associated pulleys and tensioners.

I had researched all of this when I owned a 1993 960 with a skinny 23mm timing belt (back then jimmy57 rescued me when I put the cam sensor plate in backwards and it wouldn't start)
