Need help with ABS and Transmission

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Need help with ABS and Transmission

Post by neworleans »

Hello all,

I bought a 06 S80 2.5T FWD a few weeks ago and today the ABS light came on first, I diagnosed it with Vida and got the codes in the second picture. Then after driving 30 miles, the check engine light came on as well as the Transmission Service Required message. The car was shifting hard and then I think it went into the limp mode because it drives differently, like it moves really slow when you stop and you don't feel the transmission shifting. The transmission fluid looks brown and vehicle has 124K miles. The first picture shows the codes after check engine light came on along with the Transmission Service Required message. Any ideas, recommendations? I can do a flush but wanted to ask you guys first. Thanks in advance.

Im not familiar with this late model, but I can tell you that if you drive in limp mode the fluid will be very dark and burnt and soon the transmission will need new clutches. Limp mode is third gear. I would have made it second, but I guess the engineers figured waste the trans not the engine if on the highway.

Change the transmission fluid. If some idiot got antifreeze in the transmission, Ethylene Glycol in the antifreeze can cause the TCM-002F Lock-up function. Slipping or not engaged.

I have seen cars come back from a "quick lube" with the fluids mixed up.

Thank you guys. What kind of ATF does this take? Car doesn't have a manual and the online manual shows two different kind with different transmissions.

AW55-51 7.2 liters: JW 3309
GM4T65 12.7 liters: Dexron III G

Thanks RickHaleOarker, I just looked and it is the AW55-51. I will get 16 quarts Toyota IV type fluid tomorrow from the local dealership and flush it. I am also planning to put Lucas transmission additive at the end. Do you all think it is a good idea to use Lucas or any other additives?

I would keep it simple and do just the fluid change. The more you throw at it the harder it is to diagnose the problem. Go one step at a time and make observations. You might want to Google "Gibbons method transmission flush" and do some reading.
