I ordered a new ignition switch based on VIN ('07 XC70)... it came pre set for my existing keys and didn't need any encoding.
Part price sounds about right though!
Common to have it lock up when a little piece inside the lock mechanism breaks....

That's a great idea MacNoob. The ignition lock is not "programmed" though, it just has the tumblers arranged to suit your key.

Here's a really good thread on stuck ignition switch - there are lots! Fortunately mine stuck at the grocery store just down the street from my house, I was able to free it up to get the car home.

Most likely it is the switch that goes bad, not the key.

It is likely a FREE fix by removing the bottom plate.

Yes! Remove bottom cover under steering wheel. There is like a brass looking deal under ehere the key goes in. Take a good flathead driver and hammer and beat it a few times. It should loosen up the jam. Some say you need to take all the brass things out. But i just beat on mine a few times and it works great again. Sorry for the lame description on details but you will see what im getting at when you take the bottom cover off. Good luck.
