2007 V70 R

Post by Tex69 »

Greetings,

I recently bought a 2007 Volvo V70 R. I've had extensive work done to get everything up to spec, but there are some lingering issues. These are probably minor issues, but I'm unfamiliar with the V70 R and was looking for some answers from those who
are familiar with them.

So the issues I'm having are -

1) The car is apparently designed absurdly low to the ground. I've accidentally pulled the front bumper off twice because I wasn't used to this fact. Both times I parked and pulled up to the curb or those concrete parking dividers common to many parking lots, and when pulling out, well, you can imagine. I asked the guys at the European car specialists I use (they really know their Volvos) and they said this is the nature of the beast for the V70 R. It's hard for me to imagine Volvo designing a car this way. Heck, even pulling in and out of mildly steep driveways I hear scraping.

Is this really just how these cars are?

2) Regardless of which of the three modes it's in (comfort, sport or advanced) little bumps, dips and potholes are like hitting a big pothole, or hitting a curb. I try to be careful about this, but sometimes the littlest bump in the road is received by the front tires with BAM! Thought I might blow a tire. It seems to really only be the front drivers side. The aforementioned euro cars specialists went through the car thoroughly. The front end got new everything except struts/shocks because those were still in excellent condition. I've had them take a second look, and they found nothing wrong.

Is this car just a hard ride? I am wondering if I have been spoiled by my 1993 940 and 2007 XC70 (both of which are now gone, sadly) or is there reason to believe something is amiss here?

Thanks!

The slamming over bumps sounds like blown struts, which is exactly what my car does. I have new struts on order.

Odd. The Euro guys say they are fine, so does my bread and butter domestic guy. I don't doubt you, but how could they miss it?
Problem is, they are EXPENSIVE. I was quoted just over 800.00 a piece. If it was anyone else, I'd think they were gouging me, but I know these guys, and they've proven trustworthy over the years.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to look into this more.

How many miles on the front struts? By 120k the 4C units are usually shot. Fronts go before rears.

Hey Tex 69...MDK here. If you could send us a photo of the wagon from the side.. that would help. Some one probably put lowering springs on it using the factory struts. I have an 04 R car and I just stripped out the 4 c suspension... good riddance. I utilized the factory struts and springs from a 07 S60 AWD... I have the code prompt on the dash... but I don't care. MDK,

Sure, I could do that. I have no idea what I need to take a photo of, other than something in the area behind the tires. It may take me a couple of days, as I'll have to figure out how to get under the car. I'm not sure I can squeeze under there. I may take it to my guy who does the basic repairs and maintenance, and ask him if we can put it on a lift.

I'll get back with you ASAP.

What is the 4C suspension? Is that the computer controlled suspension that allows for the three modes?

Yes, the 4C are some adaptive shock absorbers, quite pricey . See first if there's some dropping coil springs, these S60 are not that low to the ground - not much clearance, but not to the point of scratching everything underneath. If PO put dropping coils, that would explain both the harshness and the ground clearance. Try finding used genuine coil springs, shouldn't be that difficult
