2004 XC70 MAF unplugges runs best

I have a stalling problem with the MAF plugged in. I replaced it with a used one; and then sprung for a brand new one when I still had the problem the used known good one. I see no unconnected vacuum lines, connection at MAF is tie-wrapped to be secure. So I replaced the fuel pump gambling that that might be the reason for the stalling. Still stalls with MAF connected. 1.) any harm using the car with MAF unplugged. Any ideas what to look for now?

Unmetered air getting in if it runs well with MAF disconnected, then crappy with MAF connected.
