04 V70 R rear differential questions

Post by 04V70R »

Hello, I've found that the rear differential in my 04 V70 R will need to be replaced. I was under the car to replace the DEM when I noticed that one of the mounts is cracked. On top of that, one of the DEM bolts is broken flush with the differential. The combination of both issues means I'm now searching for a used differential unit.

My questions are, is the V70 and V70 R differentials different? I know that the automatic or manual have different gear ratio but will a V70 or V70 XC differential be the same as the V70 R, given they're all out of a 5spd auto?

Thanks. As for the DEM, I plan to disassemble my DEM and unsolder the ROM chip out of it to solder into the new unit. That should save me a trip to the Volvo dealer for software.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Y Ou can probably self help fastest by putting your VIN into one of the Volvo web stores and pulling the differential part number, watching carefully for chassis breaks ( changes in part number during Model years)

Then put in a generic XC70 same model year and compare.

I did a lot more research and it seems that due to the parts, conditions of the parts I found and my timeline on getting everything at my location to perform the work, I ended up buying a partial differential for my car that has the correct gearing for my car in excellent condition. That will take care of the cracked mount but this unit has the haldex unit removed from it so I will have to swap mine into it.

Anyone know what part number gaskets, o-rings or seals I might need for swapping the haldex assembly? I cannot find much info on it and I'm not sure why this one seller separated the units but this one looks very clean and has 66k miles on it.

MDK here... I'd bet that the S60 R utilizes the same differential. Check car-part.com
