Thats a great question that should be in archives. Stand by

A six inch extension plus plug socket will just clear the turbo pipe on my T5 when in the plug

You might need an extension to swing the tool 360degrees

Gotcha. So I should be fine if i remove (or move over by disconnecting only one side) the turbo pipe. BTW - the magnetic socket i mentioned above is 6'' total as far as i can tell.

OK,

The Gearwrench tool mentioned above is 6" long (3" for the socket, and 3" for the extension that is built into the tool). You will need another 3" extension. If you are new to car repair, then buy the basic Craftsman metric set for $15-$20. Then buy a separate 3" extension.

The 6" Gearwrench is perfect bc in some cars such as Honda V6 the rear spark plug is in a tight space. You drop the plug + Gearwrench combo down the well, then you attach the separate 3". Now turn it CCW, then CW by hand on the extension to prevent cross-threading.

Now attach the ratchet and tighten to specified torque.

The 6" length is perfect bc you don't want a shorter or longer Gearwrench Tool (Gearwrench makes shorter and longer versions of this magnetic socket). The 6" length + a separate 3" extension allows you to work on many many different cars

I put the pic in with the coil that pulled out of the rubber boot just to show what can happen. Don’t panic , just pull out the boot , look at it to figure out the one way it will go back together, then Reinsert.

You have to fuss around the turbo pipe a bit on this job.

Thanks, all. Hopefully that's all the info I need for this - everyone was very thorough. I'll report back once complete.

For those using socket with rubber insert that comes out, replace the rubber insert with a short section of 3/8" hose as mentioned previously. This is a great mod for the socket with rubber insert.

Oh, yes, that's fine. I think 3 inches plus the plug socket is long enough. Picture the coil pack extension - it is only about 3 inches long and touches the end of the spark plug.

A little update on spark plugs in a 2004 V70 2.5T...

- NO need to remove the plastic turbo pipe. You can work around it.

- NO need to disconnect any wiring to the coil.

- Just use the Gearwrench magnetic spark plug socket and you are good to go.

Ended up picking up this Duralast magnetic socket with a 1/2'' drive, to use with a 6'' extension:
