low idle when slowing to a stop, 1999 V70
My 1999 V70 has 110,000 and has a recent tune-up. My problem is when I slow to a stop my rpm's drop and feels like it's going to stall. Once it drops way down, it climbs immediately back up and is fine until I need to stop again. It is consistant, never fails. Any ideas? Thank you.

Has your ETM had the latest software upgrade (electronic throttle module). If not, I would recommend it...it sounds like this might be it. I believe the upgrade is #155. Ask your dealer about it...it should be free if you're having surges with your throttle module.

This was happening on my '95 850, as I slowed to a stop from coasting the RPM's dropped to 200-300, then bounced back up. It stalled once or twice. It ended up that the fuel filter was clogged, caulked full of crap due to me using cheapo gas.
Thank you Mathew and wheelsup. I will call the dealer today and ask about the upgrade.
The ff has about 15,000 on it. I will replace that as my alternate option.
Thank you both for your help!
I thought for sure it was the MAF sensor. After I called the part store and was informed it was $259, I thought for sure it must be something else! Thank you guys, again. A free upgrade or a $20 ff sounds like a better start.

A clogged or partially clogged PCV system can cause these systems also. I cleaned my wifes 2001 xc70 and it cured this problem.
Make sure all your vacuum lines are connected and in good shape also.

Hi,drexel wrote:I had something very similar. I highly recommend a throttle body cleaning. Even a small amount of dirt makes a huge difference in your idle. It was like night and day. Its an easy start anyways.
I have the same problem; every once in a while, the engine will almost stall because the rpms drop too low when coming to a near stop. This only happens in cold weather. I had the throttle body cleaned and the gas filter replaced and I only use premium gas yet the problem every now and then appears. I will leave it as that since there is no economic sense in spending $250 or so in risking change the MAF when in fact it may not be the cause. The car was checked for fault codes and no code was found that could indicate a stalling or rpm too low problem. The problem first occurred when the car had 240,000km on it but it would happen only 2 times a year in the winter. Now it happens almost once every week.
