Ticking and Smoking After Leaky Injector Install

I don't know why it took me this long to think of this but wouldn't a rod knock or lower engine noise manifest itself at the RPM frequency while a valve noise would be at RPM/2 for frequency? I am away from the car right now but I'm pretty sure that at idle the tick was closer to 500 bpm than 1000 bpm. Wouldn't this suggest valve noise of some sort rather than rod or piston?

As for using quality synthetic I just changed the oil with mobil 1 0W-40 after this issue. This oil seems to be pretty well regarded and carries lots of certifications if you are into those.

Not to state the obvious, but I'll assume the injector itself isn't ticking, or clacking a bit, as it opens and closes? As pointed out, lifter tick and injector rail work aren't related. I do have an isolated single lifter tick at times myself that doesn't really correlate to anything, however, and experimenting with various motor oils hasn't resolved it. It's gone for weeks, then comes back at various intervals. Maybe at some point I'll look in the oil pan, check oil pressure, etc. Right or wrong, I'm not really worrying about it.

Got back some oil analysis results. Unfortunately I don't have any previous baseline results as this was my first test and was going to be the baseline until this issue happened.

Fuel dilution doesn't look that bad but still a bit high. Oil seems to have retained it's viscosity pretty well too. I'm not very experienced with reading these results but none of the wear metals seems exceptionally high.

what possible use could be had from any of that information? If your car is worn out you probably knew that, and if not , you knew that too. sounds and smell have already told you the whole story. One thing might be relevant and actionable, Glycol.

Right... and doctors should just stop taking blood tests, because what possible information could be had from those stupid things, right?

I’m no expert in reading oil analysis, but there’s a lot of information to be had from them. If you don’t know that, then you certainly don’t know enough about it to call them stupid.

Oil analysis can tell you what’s wearing and where, at least to a certain degree. It can tell you if you have cylinder or piston issues, tell you if there’s perhaps a sticking injector or two, or a leaking carb, for that matter. Bearing materials would tell you to start worrying about the lower end, and as you say, glycol is useful to spot early. Those are just a few of the things that “stupid” test can tell you or hint about - I’m no expert, as I said, but even I know that.

Negativity and calling things stupid (especially when you don’t know a thing about it, apparently) is going to do nothing but reflect on yourself.

I hadn't heard of these guys, I use Blackstone. About the same price. Blackstone has confirmed that my NA oil is like new at 7500, and my T5 oil about half worn at 7500 miles. I don't do it at every change. Now that Ive fixed my oil leak on the T5, though, I no longer need free top up oil, so Ill have to sell it to a Scot somewhere.

Yesterday I took it to a local engine shop. I left the car so they could listen to the engine start cold and they diagnosed the issue as the piston hitting the cylinder wall. They said the only way to fix this would be a full rebuild and they don't rebuild these engines. They basically recommended that I just keep running it and not worry about it.

I don't think I'm really interested in trying oil additives like STP or Lucas that just thicken the oil to quiet down the noise. I would maybe think about trying engine restorer but I doubt it would help here.
