I am being told that most likely my P0442 check engine code is that so called "J" hose right near the left rear wheel on my 2002 V70. Supposedly it goes to the charcoal canister. Does this sound right?

'J" hose is the second most common cause but not the only possible cause.
Possible source
Major leak:
Fuel tank filler cap missing, not tightened or defective seal (#1 cause)
Leakage that is 1 mm or greater in the fuel tank, fuel filler pipe, fuel tank filler cap, EVAP canister, canister purge (CP) valve, or in the hoses between these components
The fuel gauge does not function (This fault is detected by the rear electrical module).
Minor leak:
Leakage that is 0.5-1.0 mm or smaller in the fuel tank, fuel filler pipe, fuel tank filler cap, EVAP canister, canister purge (CP) valve, or in the hoses between these components
The fuel gauge does not function (This fault is detected by the rear electrical module).
Keep in mind five 0.01 will add up to 0.5.

Thanks "Mr. Parker" for that response. It certainly would be an easier fix for me if I can't get under the car by that rear wheel.
I will order up a new filler cap today, sir. Thx!

Did you pull the filler cap off, inspect it and find something wrong?Mr. Detail wrote: 29 Apr 2019, 14:07 Thanks "Mr. Parker" for that response. It certainly would be an easier fix for me if I can't get under the car by that rear wheel.

If replacing the J-hose is required you drill out the pop rivets of the LR fender plastic and get it out of the way.
Big body pop rivets require the larger size gun or one with replaceable collets.
My '02's J-hose went out at 107K and 8 years of age.

RHP, yes I opened the gas filler door and inspected the cap last evening. It looks to me that I had already replaced the whole cap a few months back. It looks brand new to me. Can the seal on the cap go that fast?

Poor fix to start with Yes.
Wear out no.
However they have TV shows on how fast something can be destroyed ... Damage does not take long.
That why I ask if you inspected it.
