96' 850 Fuel Pump Question

good man. it won't be a week unless you used IPD's free shipping and then it will be two weeks. they hold it for a week to learn you a lesson.

Ordered from Eeuroparts. Nice folks to deal with but they aren't the speediest either, even when you pay for shipping. Although they are only an hour away from me, I have never gotten anything in under 4 days. But that's alright, maybe I can find some time on a weeknight next week to install it.

Often over looked failure of a fuel pump is the fuel filter. They get a bit clogged, the pump has to work harder and burns out faster. Always do them together unless you've replaced it recently.

On Friday Eeuroparts really surprised me with a super speedy delivery of my OEM fuel pump, so yesterday I went right to work.

The first thing I noticed was that I was not the first one to be in there, as the cables to the pump were secured by Gorilla tape

The next surprise was the fuel pump that was in there. It looked different than the OEM and it was very dirty up on top.
This looks to me like someone installed an old used aftermarket pump in this car.

The reason why this is intruiging is that the car only has 108k on it now. That means the original pump failed very early. And whoever changed it didn't use an OEM one and possibly not a new one.

Here is old and new side by side.

Doesn't really matter, the 850 is running again, yay!

I think people run these pumps down to the idiot man light coming on - and that's the reason for early demise.

I tell SWMBO the story of the fuel pump I changed in a BMW with 20k on the clock.

"No start, no fuel pressure, amp signature was wacky as all getup. Asked my new lead tech if he knew a secret way to change a fuel pump whitout spilling gas in the car. He said be careful... turns out the best way not to spill gas is to run it bone dry..."

I always end the story with 1/4 tank is the new empty, fuel pumps use gas to keep cool. No gas, no cool, overheat and burnout faster.

SWMBO says, "I know, I know, I've heard you tell that story so many time I could tell it myself."

Wouldn't you know, every time I drive her 96 850 GLT with 321k on the clock the gas light is on or comes on...

I keep telling myself I'm gonna make her pay the $300 for the pump but I know she'll put it on my card and I'll "yes dear" myself out of that argument.

That's when you let her change the pump with your instruction...
