Fuel Pump Relay Location to the 2001 XC70

Fuel Pump Relay Location to the 2001 XC70

Hello,

I recently bought a 2001 V70XC from a friend who parked it after it died. I believe it to be a relay or fuel pump. I have been searching high and wide for this relay location, and it appears to be unique to the 2001 XC with the 2.4L Turbo???

I found the relay diagram on this site and was able to locate it under the driver side dash in CIM12. I swapped it out with a fog light relay just to test, but still nothing. I plan to pull the pump this weekend and see if the connector is getting power to it, however I just want to make sure I am covering my bases as there is a lot of talk about the Red, 103 relay on these vehicles that usually needs to be replaced. However, it has a female connector and I can't seem to locate where it should go, or maybe it's not right for my vehicle. Does anyone know where this is located or am I way off on this relay (photo attached).

I have ordered a new Bosch 69746 Fuel Pump (plastic tank) which I will most likely install anyways since the car has 231,000 miles on it and there is no documentation whether this has ever been replaced.

I appreciate any help on this, I have also included my VIN number if that offers any insight to my novice question. Thank you for any help on this!

I've heard the 2001-2002 don't have a PEM but I might be wrong. These are the locations I'm aware off on 2003-up
The XC90 also has a location inside the left (?) rear wheel well, behind the plastic cover
The fuel pumps on these Volvo are unlike what you will find in a Honda or Ford. Volvo ones last forever and most likely the culprit is a PEM or FPS (when equipped with one). Have you checked the timing belt ? If the car stopped all of a sudden there can be other issues, such as a failed water pump or belt components, failed DEM, etc

I have checked the timing belt, all of that is newer and was replaced before it died, per my friend. She mentioned it would constantly sputter and sometimes die. Then one day it just wouldn't start. It turns over great though, but it appears to be lacking any fuel.

I appreciate the insight on this! All of my googling has led me to assume it may be a Relay. I have pulled every fuse and relay and all appear to be clean and no popped fuses or arc marks on the relays to show they have blown. My Audi RS4 had this type of issue last summer and with an $11 relay and 5 hours of getting to it, it fired right back up and has been running like a dream ever since. I guess I just want to verify the relay variable before ripping into the fuel pump area is all. Again, I appreciate your input on my post.

Hike over to Advance Auto, get a real fuel pressure gauge, and measure it at the rail. It needs to be up at 50 psi or else Baby won't run.

That will also send you down the right path of troubleshooting.

Your 2001 has a embedded fuel pump relay on the CEM, a PEM, and a modulated fuel pump

Also have a look at the FPS in the same place, if there's one at the right end of the fuel rail. You may also have a external fuel filter, worth servicing it while there

ABSCATE, on my 2001 S60, I have looked for the usual PEM but I cannot find it on the passenger side underneath just in front of rear wheel. Is the PEM installed elsewhere on this year? Also, is the fuel filter installed under that center panel under the car, where a driveshaft would be installed on a RWD car? Still working on the intermittent crank, no start

My PEM was on top of the tank , but there is also a TSB to move it from there into the trunk area to prevent corrosion - so it can have been moved on your car.
