Interesting fact about replacement struts - why are there several OEM part # available

I was browsing about the Genuine replacement struts available, and to my surprise Volvo has no less than 6 different part numbers for the 2001-2009 vehicles. Meanwhile when you order some Sachs replacement for example, they sell one model for all cars. So how can Sachs fit all cars, when Volvo has 6 different numbers ? I remember the problems with the front of the cars sitting higher with new shock absorbers, maybe the reason is Sachs and other aftermarket parts did not take into account the variations of the genuine shock absorbers.
