Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Volvo S80 opinions

Post by smatt1079 »

Hi, no problem really, so I hope this is the right forum. I've been looking at buying a used S80 for a little while now, and see that some folks (including some on this site) recommend NOT buying any S80 made before'02. I was wondering if there are any opinions out there on the S80, (whether before or after '02) or any other general things (problems, etc) to look out for on the S80's as I look aound.

only slightly off from the above topic, I'm particularly interested in an '04 2.5t awd, but I'm a little concerned because I know its the first S80 awd 2.5t Volvo released, and I'm always concerned about buying the first generation of anything. The price is pretty attractive however at 16k.

Paging JRL...

I voted No. My dad's 1999 S80 has been significantly worse for maintenance costs than my 97 850.

Even I voted no, but then I found a 99 at an amazing price. Only apparent problems are that it needs tires, an the srs light is on. A little worried about the SRS light, but I got this thing with 70kmi for 2500 bucks! If worse comes to worst I'll just resell it. Now I'm off to search for whats causing the srs light to be on ;)

Yes. In fact, I did buy a 2001. The 2001 model has fewer repair problems than the 1999 or 2000 according to Consumer Reports. Mine did have the oil recovery system leak (fixed myself) and the turbo oil line leaks (fixed at the dealer). So far no problem with the ETM. If I were you, I'd consider a 2001, but have it checked out before purchasing. Good luck.

You know I wasnt that crazy about the color of the one that I bought, so this one will go to the wife in place of the 220kmi 850 Turbo. I have a lead on an 01 S80 T6 Executive (oooooh, ahhhh, ohhhhhhh). My brother is getting the 850 GLT.

So my only question is - who wants to buy a 95 850 turbo? :)

My 2000 S80 is at 254K miles and still going strong. I bought it real cheap 2 years ago with 219K. It needed an ABS rebuild, and has since needed 2 top engine mounts (poly one disintegrated), a strut mount, and an ignition coil. I added new struts and lowering springs, which improved the handling nicely, and have done various cosmetic repairs/replacements.

Overall, this car has been an outstanding purchase for me. It is my first Volvo and I must say I truly appreciate the comfort and ride (and the bargain). I loathe my dealership, however, and have been able to do all the mantenance and work it needed myself.

I have read many a forum post about problems with these models. I'm sure they are real problems. I thought I would add my positive experience, since they are much less likely to be posted to a forum.
