ETM Question

Post by ChadLee »

I have a 2001 V70 NA and looking for a ETM from local pick and pulls. Am I pigeon holed into just pulling from other 2001 NA V70's or can I broaden my search criteria?

I know that turbos are out for sure, but can I dig one out of a 99 or 00 S70, 80 or 60?

I have been shopping for a VIDA, would this be helpful in this situation?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Chad, there are a number of different software versions around and you need the right one. As far as I know there is always a chance of getting the wrong software even if MY and engine match.

That said, VIDA would help because you can use it to read out the exact software version of your ETM and that of candidate donors and make sure you get a match.

But, can I get a ETM from a 1999 S80 and put it into a 2001 V70 and cross my fingers?

You can but it'd be ineffective.
In addition to the software variances DrDan mentioned the ETMs are addressed to the car.

A more certain approach would be to send your ETM to a rebuilder.
Xemodex is one rebuilder. Cluster Fix might do ETMs as well.
They'll return your unit thus eliminating the chance of CANBUS mismatch.

Even if I found a XeMODex ETM, it is still vehicle specific? I am not familiar with CANBUS.

Controller Area Network omniBUS (CANBUS) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer. Kind of like an old fashioned party line.

And everyone agrees, that I need to get a direct replacement or repair from XeMODeX or similar company. There is no salvaging one and plugging it into my car and having it operate?

Yes chadlee.. these Volvo's vehicles (when it comes to the electronics ) are vehicle specific. You have to match them perfectly or have someone like xemodex rebuild them. Goes by VIN# part# and sometimes where it was built. I did have a 2004 V70 titanium pkg that was built in Belgium not Gothenburg..

Above advice all good. The best chance of a match is with a NA V70 or NA S60 from the same year as they used the same engine computer and engine/transmission management. Still you have a 50:50 chance unless you can read the software on the ETM with Vida before purchase.

If you get Vida/Dice and end up with the wrong software version post here and I'll point you to a guy or two that can solve this for you over the internet (for a small fee)
