2000 Volvo S80 6cyl Automatic, Wont shift, Cable is ok..
Greetings, my wife reported that the shift lever was hard to move. As usual I ignored the situation. Now the shifter will not move. I removed the cable from the shift arm on the transmission and discovered the shift arm works very hard. Anyone have the same experience? Thanks all for your help!

How many miles are on your car? Have you ever had the transmission serviced?
So you are saying that the shifter in the car and the cable work freely, but the lever on the side of the transmission is hard to move?

The transmission was serviced around 100k, car has 120k on it.
The shift arm on the transmission requires a lot of force to move it through the gear ranges.

Is the car parked on a steep hill with the transmission in park and the parking brake off? This can create a lot of pressure on the parking pawl in the transmission, requiring a lot of force to move the lever. Also, the shift lever in the car gives you a mechanical advantage due to where the pivot is, so it will require more force to move the lever on the transmission than to move the shift lever in the car.
