Passenger side inner CV boot now leaks grease at the clamp. The boot looks fine, but grease looks and feels too thinned. Does the tripod fully comes out - is there a procedure?

To get the tripod out you have to grind down the staked ridges at the end of the inner joint bucket. I used a Dremel and a small grinding wheel. You might be able to use a small flat file but you need to careful with inner part of the bucket where the rollers slide.

Thank you!

This pair of axle was donor from 2007 XC70 with 56,000 miles. The pair is in great condition at 100,000+ miles. The inner boot doesn't show any damage. I'll do a through clean up, refill with GKN grease, and finish with fresh crimp tie.

Hey xHeart,

Question re GKN Boot 31256231 you installed back in 2014.
I understand that these are thermoplastic (not rubber).
How many yr/miles have you had on these plastic boot?
Is Plastic boot holding up OK?

The GKN boot was not a rubber like original, but it is flexible like rubber -- a silicon feel. The material has a finished look, deflective, and harder to pierce -- slips off. Recently, I refilled and clamped passenger side inner boot due to escaping grease -- my first time and poor crimping skills and choice of tool then.

The pairs have above 50,000 miles with GKN boots and going strong.

Same reason I rebuilt both front axles last weekend. Only the inner passenger boot was leaking from the large clamp on the carrier. When removed it I find no damage to the rubber boot.

Just wonder how the grease got diluted?

For the new rubber boot I clamped it down tight without cracking it.

I found rebuilding was best in my situation. I believe, cn90's write up suggested aging and extreme temps causes breakdown for grease to turn runny. The inner at the drive-axle (driver's side) appears to be holding. But I've rebuilt pair on the shelf incase.

The gas mileage continues to improve since the oil pan/crankcase project.
