Amblerman, we're still living in the 18th Century under Pennsylvania statutes. As a Judge of Elections, the law requires me to supply a lantern. Quaint, but that should be outta there by now...

I was curious about that $55k, too, but didn't want to draw any attention to Abscate. He's too useful to have sitting in some federal pen with no internet access.

I too have had some great experiences buying cars and other stuff like wheels off CL lately.

For example, the guy who sold me the $650 S70 5-speed was a super nice retired systems analyst from Westpoint. Who would have thought. Description of the car was very spotty, but on the phone he was more than helpful. Then when I test drove the car he said: Cmon, I know you want to see this thing from underneath don't you. And so he drove straight into Westpoint and used a lift in their fleet garage - amazing!

I think it takes patience for the right car to pop up and the right instinct. If I don't get a vaguely fuzzy feeling after the first contact I don't bother anymore. It's simply not worth my time.

I get one hour a day for good behaviour. Next year I’m out on weekends.

Seriously , a 400 mile Boston trip pays me $220 in mileage reimbursement, tax free

I figure my actual cost of running on my depreciated T5 is about $80 for that trip, all in. Depreciation being the key

well it costs 15 cents a mile just for gas 3.00/gal@22mpg, more for my turbo with premium. insurance is 800$/8000miles so is 10 cent a mile. tires 500/30000miles 1.5cents. parts and batteries $800/8000mi is 10 cents a mile. so with zero acquisition cost you are spending
36.5 cents a mile. just throw a ten on the dash when you drive 25 miles for a six pack.

you get chewed in NJ on insurance

$270 a year for 30,000 miles for me on insurance on the T5
Just under 30 mpg at $3 gallon if I keep the boost off cruising, and over 30 mpg on the NA
Tires 1 cpm
Last year parts bill was $3200 over 6 cars - total miles driven was 69,000 miles - a nickel per mile spread out.

I know exactly what you mean about CL sucking these days. Although I hate it, Facebook (Facebook is what I hate) Marketplace has been way better in St Louis lately. CL is full of scammers locally. Ive sold a bunch of stuff on the FB marketplace lately, and not one scammer. So I'd recommend trying that going forward. I got my last few cars of CL but it's seems like CL is dead or dying. Just my $.02

Oh and I'm with abscate. Self employment write offs are amazing. It's $0.58/miles for 2019. I'm at $6k in write offs just in mileage for the year myself.

That is amazing and i don't even understand what the scam is here. I mean it is just to harvest phone numbers? What is scam on listing but not really every trying to sell a <$500 volvo with 303k miles on it (supposedly)

Btw. I LOVE, craigslist ads with pictures like that.

In this day and age it's pretty tough to take a bad picture with a cell phone but people keeping doing it. Or pictures at night do you can't see the car.

But seriously. What is scam here? I'm trying to understand it.

When you show up they jack your ride. Of course, you can reverse scam them by showing up in an insured rental , they towing the car home for free.

Must be a scam of some sort. The car is sitting in a Burger King parking lot where it died. I offered to meet him there with cash as long as he had a title and ID to prove he's the owner. Dead silence. What a waste. The owner of the Burger King is going to have that car towed and it will be scrapped because the tow company will want $350 to release it to the owner. I guess it is essentially abandoned.
