Help with getting a spare key.

For as long as I have got my S60 I only have the master key, nothing else. I know it pays to be redundant, but I am wondering if it's worth getting a service key for about 300, or juts get another master key as backup for about 400. What do you guys suggest?

Hey there 11211... from what I gather you can only get a new key from Volvo..laser cut. You'll need VIN# my advice on something like that just let them have their way on that one. The way the technology is going be glad we still have keys. Who wants to open the door and start it with a smart phone anyway? Long as you have a full charge.. and a signal from the cell tower. Sheesh... How stupid do those geniuses think we are? The old adage is "we can but should we." I had a beautiful 2005 V50 T5 non-awd that got totaled. It had a key... but in reality the "computer" sense it and made a buzzing noise. 600$ repair from Volvo... totally uncessary... except for the parts counter and the service department....$$$_

I see. Could the service key be upgraded to the master? Or should I just put in $100 more for a second master? I just don't want to be stranded when a key is lost, yet I don't want to take big hits to the wallet.

Search forum and you will see that the only option is dealer. About $250 when it is all done.

Another option is check local dealer for the previous owner. My dealer did that (contacted P.O.) and asked for me. The P.O. checked and told the dealer they could not find extra key at home. Worth a try.

The only thing I don't know is if you can lock/unlock the doors with a key without the tranponder inside. If you find the answer to be yes, then may try the following:

You will need to find a place that will cut blank keys. Ebay has services but you need to send your key so won't be able to use the car for a while. These may also ask you to buy the blank key from them, otherwise blank 'Volvo' keys from Ebay are bout $5. With the new keys cut, you can remove the transponder from inside the original one, and place it with a good tape (no glue as it can damage the little thing) such as gorilla tape inside near the barrel (can lift the upper cover behind the steering) .

The transponder is fragile much care removing it or your car will become a 'brick'

No you can't upgrade a service key to a master key. You can drive the car with a service key.

You can buy the key online from some dealers with proof of ownership, if your local dealer is more expensive than typical.
