FINALLY solved this problem. I took the car to a Volvo specialist shop where they took a look at it with VIDA. Confirmed to be an intermittent problem with the exhaust VVT caused by a bad VVT hub, bad solenoid or wiring fault. They couldn’t narrow it down any further. So I ordered a new hub and installed it. Fault came up again within 5 minutes of driving. Decided the only way to check the solenoid wiring was to go right back to the ECU box. I found a good wiring diagram, determined the correct pins on the module connector socket. With 12v on one side of the solenoid, I grounded the appropriate terminal on the ECU socket and the solenoid worked. I checked the intake solenoid in the same manner. The only other culprit was the solenoid itself which I had already replaced with a new (but aftermarket) unit. I got hold of yet another used one, installed it, and low and behold the problem is fixed, no more P0027! All together it cost me over $700 in parts, but I saved that much on labour by doing it myself, which I couldn't have done without all the help from everyone here. THANK YOU all!

Professional Parts Sweden is the manufacturer- as you correctly pointed out in a post earlier in this thread:
“That's an aftermarket replacement part and quality of most of those are suspect.”

That’s why crappy parts supply chain is such a pain. You just can’t get a decent diagnosis without playing parts darts
