Time to say goodbye....T5

Post by precopster »

My 2001 T5 (actually a Feb 2000 build) was offloaded today after a 4 year love/hate relationship.

Major gripes: ABS controller (DSTC)  not able to be repaired and a used replacement costing almost $300 also didn't work.  A new controller is worth over AUD $1,500 to land here and the yaw sensors for the cabin are no longer stocked by Volvo.  Matt from Midwest has no success with these either.

Head gasket had failed causing excessive coolant system pressure and I had "plugged" the head gasket with an off the shelf liquid resin with kevlar fibres.

Heater core failure and because of early build it was not removable without dashboard removal; it's Winter here now.

Solenoid 3 in transmission: total failure. Limp mode every 500 metres.   Vida read the failure as an oil control problem with solenoid 3, perhaps a split o ring.

I just couldn't put an extra 20-25 weekend hours in to fix the above.

The car performed as if on steroids because I had a higher compression engine (B5244T3) with the standard T5 turbo and tune ,  the sound system blew me away but the lazy turning circle was hard work around town and constant attention required was robbing my weekends.   Still I will miss my little rocket.

I got rid of my '99 V70 XC fixer-upper that I never quite got to fix, too, though I never actually got to drive mine other than rolling it down the driveway and on to the back of a flatbed truck. Good times!

She will miss you too Mike.

We had extreme cold temps (-46ºF) past winter -- fallen water and river freeze with smoke rising is a magnificent sight. But each of our Volvo started fine with a trickled battery charging overnight on cars parked in driveway. I also switched yearly oil and filter change to the beginning of winter season, around Thanksgiving.

How cold does it get there?

It can dip down to 45F in the depths of winter. People get trapped in their thongs and the kangaroos drown thinking the ocean will freeze - they can't swim of course.

In the Melbourne region we have very rare 0 degC 32degF but rarely so. No snow and mild Summers. It's colder in Tasmania of course. The little devils thrive in that.

We have various mountain ranges for skiing where there's plentiful snowfall: Buller, Hotham, Lake Mountain and of course the inland New South Wales ranges of which there are quite afew including Mt Kosciuszko.

If you want year round water sports and fishing Queensland is where it's at.

My wife wears thongs year round regardless of weather.....some Aussie DNA has crept in there.

"Today Precopster's V70 T5 went to its final resting place. The vehicle had a DNR order filed (Do Not Repair) and some recent failures sealed it demise.
The tow truck procession traveled a route lined with P2 wagon owners standing at attention with tools hoping for a chance to grab needed bits form the vehicle if it happened to have an active components donor card and the tow truck happened to slow or stop. In lieu of flowers it is the wish of owner that donations be made the the MVS moderator fund."
