Picked up another one... this time it's an '01 S60 2.4t. Not too bad overall, I think it'll clean up pretty well. The PO said the transmission went out, which wouldn't surprise me being an AW55, but I have a feeling that it's not the problem. Apparently he took out the turbo to swap into his '00 S70 GLT which he thought had a bad turbo, but it turned out to be the head gasket on that car. The original turbo from the S70 was sitting on the passenger side floor, so I'll have to put a turbo in it before I start it. Not sure if I'll use this turbo or get one from the junkyard, there's a little bit of radial play. Plus I'm pretty sure this car should have a 14t, and the 2000 has a 13t, but I'm not sure on that. I'm also not sure that there's too much of a difference between them.

Only pic I have of the S60 for now. I need to wrap up a couple other smaller projects (engine replacement on my dad's buddy's Durango, changing the timing belt and cam seals on my brother's Miata) before I really tear into this one.

I also replaced one control arm and inner/outer tie rod on the XC90, I need to do the other side in the morning so I can bring it to get the new tires mounted. The current tires are totally shot, I ordered some Nokian zLines from Simple Tire. They turned out to be just under $500 delivered with their sale this week, so really a great price for 255/50R19s! Plus they're pretty good tires from what I've heard, so we'll see how they perform.

I found replacement moldings in the Genuine Classic Parts (Sweden) catalog, the price wasn't awful but one side (left/driver's) was available in limited quantities, "contact us". So I did -- they had one (1) left. So I ordered the pair, and a few days later received an e-mail back -- the pieces (which are indeed long and an strange size to put in a box) -- are too big to ship (I'm presuming that they meant "at any reasonable price".)

So for Plan D, I scraped as much of the old coating from the trim pieces as possible and used Trimbrite T9005 Blackout Tape (PepBoys, $6.99). I ended up doing each side twice. It seems to take doing it a couple of times to get it, more-or-less looking okay. I also learned that it is easiest to cut the tape to size with scissors first, instead of trying to trim it when applying.

It looks okay. (Or at least better then it did when I started.)
Looks like it turned out pretty well!

Repainted front bumper cover black again. Took a lot of rock and salt/sand hits this winter. Will have to take a picture once the sun is out...
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Yeah, I shouldn't have to worry about that

I've replace the belts, the PCV. I've have got the hands exploded because the bolts around the dipstick are peculiarly hard to get.

I thought about attempting a similar project. But my idea was to tape off the area around the rails and spray it with generic flex seal (rubberized coating).Thinking one to two light, even coats will leave it looking pretty close to original.

Was going to put new sparkplugs in my Volvos today, but so far I have been totally unable to gap the Bosch coppers I bought. I don't know what metal this ground is made out of, but it's not copper. Putting all my weight on it against a hard surface and the gap didn't even change. I don't remember gapping sparkplugs being this hard.

Needed a small victory today after being foiled by the fuel filter and now the spark plugs, so I changed my disgusting cabin air filter on the '99.

Checked out the turbo for the S60 today, very small amount of radial play in the CHRA, but I think it's okay to put back in. The PO left it on the passenger floor because he was using it to troubleshoot his other Volvo... turns out it wasn't the problem. Apparently there were no issues with it, so I don't think I have anything to worry about. Just need to get the oil drain o-ring, I have everything else on the shelf.

I considered that option, too. Some have suggested using black flexible bumper paint.

I also considered Deere "Blitz Black" paint (popular with "rat rod" builders), sprayed or applied with a brush.

To get the best result without overspraying I would have removed the trim and that would risk bending the unobtanium/aluminum trim pieces -- plus the clips holding them in place are 21 years old, too.

I noticed that the old Corolla "company car" has black tape applied to the window frames from the factory.

If it's good enough for Toyota...

Yesterday, I decided to transplant the harvested '99 XC bumper on to the '00 V70, which had a bumper that looks chewed up by normal NYC parking trauma. Crazy creaky bolts were holding it on the bumper brackets, but they came off easily enough. Almost all of the T25 screws underneath the bumper had ripped through the cover, so it was extra easy to remove.

Attaching the "new" bumper was a lot tricker and required some finessing (with a large screwdriver) of the bumper brackets so that the long 14mm bolts would align. I only got one in before it got dark.

That looks great! Did you use any solvent to clean up the trim?

I shouldhave wouldave couldhave dragged a Uhaul down for the engine pick.

:-(

The wrath of SWMBO is not to be endured often, however.
I know! If not for the lady of the house, I would've just made room in the garage to pick the engine, etc. Maybe next time. :)
