I agree, after my cousin used a high mileage oil in his Durango and grenaded a pistion ring then in his S70 and blew a cam seal, I stay away from high mileage fluids/oils. Yes, both of those things would have gone wrong anyway, but the swelling agents and cleaners probably accelerated the failures.
wlkstout wrote: 02 Feb 2018, 20:58 Not trying to rescue it just clean it up some. Fluid was brown, no pink when i got it. And have had good luck with Maxlife before but that was replaced at Wal-Mart with the castrol stuff. Maybe I'll just use Supertech or Castrol Dex/Merc, whichever is cheaper and call it a day.
Like I said, I use the Castrol Dex/Merc and it's been just fine. I highly recommend it. Also for the price and availability, you can't beat it.

Blowing a cam seal has more to do with poor crankcase ventilation than oil quality.

That is true, but I don’t think switching to 10w30 high mileage from 0w40 was the best for it.

I very much agree when it comes to transmissions. HM engine oil I think can be a different story depending on the situation.

For the 4speed automatics they just want normal, clean fluid. I had one from my last 850 get burnt to a crisp when the trans cooler lines popped off the rad (my fault, not the car’s) and the damaged trans would have lasted forever as long as I kept clean fluid in it. It was amazing.

High mileage trans fluid/addiditives had a noticeable effect for a day or two, but only fresh clean fluid kept it going for 5K miles or so until I needed to change it again.

At the risk of reviving an old, dead thread, I wanted to add that I have been using Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc for the past 8 years, doing a complete replacement every two years in the summer time by disconnecting the upper transmission hose and removing 12 quarts, four at a time, and refilling four at a time with the new fluid thru the transmission dipstick.
Last week, I switched from Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc to Castrol Transmax High Mileage and the shifting was noticeably smoother. I decided to try switching because the price of the High Mileage was $16/gallon compared to about $24/gallon for the Dex/Merc. I'll see how long the shifting remains smooth, and if there are any problems.

I think it's good to revive some these older threads that get buried. Some of us can remember when they started, but there are new users looking for the same answers, or find value in reading them when looking for something else.

I have good luck with both Castrol Transmax HM, and Valvoline MaxLife in the 2 850's and one V70 we've had over the years, although the latter is usually what I find it best priced. The current '97 850 we have is close to 278k miles with the original transmission. I do a drain and fill every other oil change (around 5k) with the MaxLife, but would have no issue using the Castrol if it was consistently at the same price point and rebates I seem to consistently see for the MaxLife.

Our two local Walmarts don't consistently have one or the other in stock, but their website allows anything on their product list to be delivered to a local store within 2 days for pick up.

I have considered going with the Aisin brand T-IV fluid or the Toyota T-IV stuff.

I use cheap Supertech Dex3 in all my P80 cars. Full flush when I get the car, then 4 qt drain-and-fill every 30k miles.

I use Castrol Transmax in my '94 850 NA. Drain and fill, doing them every other Oil Change. (10k) takes about 3 & 2/3 qts. Advance auto has it on sale quite often. Good stuff !
