05 S80 replacing HID bulbs - REMOVE THE BUMPER??!

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

05 S80 replacing HID bulbs - REMOVE THE BUMPER??!

Post by 850TurboTurtle »

Is it true I have to remove the front bumper in order to change the HID bulbs in my 05 S80? I'll admit, I can't see an easy way into them from the back.

And, does anyone know exactly which bulbs it takes? There are large rectangular cooling fins on the back of the headlamp area, not a circular cover that screws off. These are the bulbs that dim by rotating the bulb position inside the housing, not with a different element.

Not sure if you need to remove the bumper but here is the diagram for the assembly. Bulb is #17

I wish I could have it that easy also. Due to moisture in the interior of both light assembly I do have to remove the bumper and disassemble it to clean before reapplying fresh sealant. While I'm in there I also need to replace the battery in the siren module.

Do cross reference with other websites on the bulb as some say Xenon while others Bi-Xenon? Let us know how it turns out?

It appears that Xenon means xenon hi beam and halogen low beam. What I have is Bi-Xenon, where the bulb shifts position to change the aim on the beam, but there is only one bulb on all the time. It seems the key is just to know what type of bulb you are replacing. Mine was a D2R bulb which does the high and low.

Doing some research I found my 08 C30 T5 has Xenons as low beam while the H7 is for high beam in operation. Volvo has two diagrams with basically the same headlight assemblies (minus 5 parts on one). The bulbs have differing descriptions but the same parts number for both.

(D2S 35W vs D2S 35W Xenon).

As for the Bi-Xenon it is as you described 1 bulb for both high and low beam using mechanical means to move the reflector or bulb. Thanks.

Just an aside: my wife's 02 S60 has standard bulbs, and it far far brighter than my Xenons, both at distance and lighting up the medians. Volvo really botched the Xenon introduction.
