2007 S40 passenger side tail light issue

Post by VolvoRollo »

My son has a 2007 S40. Passenger side tail light was out. I bought (2) 7528 Sylvania bulbs and replaced. They came on for a moment and went out. I figured the "housing" for all the bulbs had a short. I bought a new housing from local Volvo dealer $40, replaced all the bulbs and cranked it up and it worked all lights were working. I assumed problem was solved.
Last evening my son goes to drive his car and returns inside stating his tail light was not on. Turn signal, back up all work . Tail light does not work consistently , it might come on one time you crank it and the next time it will not.
What should I do next?

Your current loco Volvo dealer sold you a used and defective housing. I'd go to another Volvo dealer and pay for the higher price unit.

Thank you for your reply.

I checked with the dealer and was assured it was a new "bulb holder" .

The next thing I did was located two new connectors that plug into the "bulb holder" a green one and a gray one( I spliced them in). This did not work either, the taillights came on briefly, then blinked off.

All other lights still work brake, back-up and blinker. Only the taillights on the passenger side do not come on. The drivers side works fine. It was suggested to me that a simple option or fix that would work....is to straight wire from the tail light (drivers side) a single wire from the harness to the passenger side to get power to the tail light, but make sure I clip the same wire on passenger side

Problem I have is how do I know which wire to splice from the driver side to the passenger side?

My suspicion is the gray connector is the the tail light and the black wire is the hot wire in that connector.

Does anyone know?

The green connector has 4 wires... a solid black, solid orange. 2 orange with black stripes.
The gray has 3 wires...green with black stripe(I presume the ground) a solid black and a bluish with red/orange stripe.

Hi VolvoRollo,

I don't like electrical so usually don't attempt anything except examining the area or part directly affected. That being said and I don't know how it's wired can you:

1) Check the brake switch above the brake pedal?
2) Check any or all relays related to the rear brake light assembly?
Blessings,
