This happened to me with my 2007 Volvo S8 V8 when I was replacing the battery. The immobilizer was activated during the replacement (likely by accessing the interior to manually lock the car) & when I inserted the key to start the car, nothing happened & it kept the key. I went to the Volvo dealer for help and was advised to do a factory reset - disconnect both +ve & -ve leads from the battery and tie them together for 5 min. Reconnect & start. It worked. Note that just disconnecting & reconnecting one lead from the battery after the key was stuck did not work (I tried that before going to the dealer).
