Hi folks!
Bumping here. Timing belt & water pump are Oem components .
I just done the timing belt on my XC70 2005 2.5T, water pump, idler and the tensioner. Car run great and no code, no problems with the VVTs.

I did adjust the timing belt tensioner three times but at idling the tensioner is still shaking, is this normal?

I run the car to temperature, then cut the engine. The tensioner is at warm position.

Should i try to set the tensioner again?

You are in France, what brand of TB tensioner do you use?

I guess a bit of movement is "normal"...

You may want to stop by a dealer mechanic and ask if a bit of movement is "normal".
The question is: how many mm of movement is considered normal...

The video below from a S60R seems to show a normal TB tensioner movement...

Thanks cn90!

I did followed most of your post (XC90) for the timing belt, great!
Timing belt, idler, Tensioner, water pump are from the Volvo kit.
It move a bit like 2mm/3mm at idling. This is exactly what the tensioner does in the video posted.

What torque did you put on the tensioner ? It is 15lb*ft - 20Nm. It not a lot actually. Too much torque can distort the spring inside the tensioner

My old original tensioner was shaking like in the video. I don't know if this is ok or not. The replacement tensioner does not move at all (INA brand).

Verify also the belt is running about in the middle of the pulley and doesn't wobble

I torqued the tensioner to 20Nm. Did try three times and it is still shaking.
The tensioner is Volvo / INA brand and the belt is running straight.

Ok i'll have another try before night.

Interresting in this post. Looks like it is normal to see the tensioner moving to keep constant tension.

Will keep an eye tomorrow morning.

I went this morning redo the tensioner set up at cold engine (middle). The tensioner was in the left side and the belt wasn't properly tight.
The car runs great, the move is still there but less, guess it is gonna seat when everything fall into place.

I guess you can try another trick: with engine COLD, adjust the tensioner so it is a bit to the RIGHT, near the vertical post.
Then see how it settles down with time.

Excessive rhythmic tensioner 'shake' could be indicative of engine imbalance...which could trace to anything from ignition/timing/detonation, weak cylinders (compression test), to a harmonic balancer or dual mass flywheel that needs replaced, bearings going out (engine internal or anything that the accessory and/or timing belts wind around).

If it doesn't settle down you're probably looking at one of the above.
