Some updates:
Couldn't get to this job today before the sun set over Manhattan today... The wife had errands to run and by the time she got back there was only enough time to change the oil.

But I do have some updates.

I am thinking the little hook on the new bracket will go into some hole (right by my question mark) and will be supported by this bolt. The bolt, according to the parts diagram is the same on ALTER 1 and ALTER 2. And after looking at it closely and inspecting it alongside the other bracket, that certainly seems to be the case. There is no way (that I can see) of using both rear bracket pieces...

I wish the bracket were flat, but if you look closely at the hook end of the bracket, there's an angle to it. Will it fit, who knows!!

In other news, I have discovered the size of an OE Volvo bolt so that we can all save money when we want to!

Volvo 982839 = 12mm x 1.75 x 30mm bolt. 8.8 of course!

However, head sizes will be a little different as I believe the Volvo bolt is JIS. This bolt is 16mm to the Volvo's 15mm head size. And the flange on the aftermarket zinc-plated bolt is a little wider. It shouldn't make a difference in this case... Just wondering, but which bolt do you guys believe is more "corrosion" resistant? The zinc-plated one right? Or the black one?

Final update:
Finally had some time to get this done today. Was able to remove the two brackets without much difficulty. The 12mm head bolts holding 3547625 came out pretty easily. I did soak them in PB Blaster for over twenty-four hours. I don't think it's in too bad of shape, especially for 18 years.

Volvo 9434431 came out without much of a problem. I couldn't really lower the muffler too much so if I didn't have flex-head sockets, this probably wouldn't have come out so easily. I was surprised that the bolt head was an 18mm. Especially since the new OE is 16mm and the aftermarket version is 15mm... It broke loose pretty easy. Again, this had gotten some sprays of PB Blaster twenty four hours earlier.

So the real issue here was whether or not Volvo 9470686 would fit into ALTER 1 and ALTER 2. As far as I can see, it will. The little hook in this piece enters a hole that exists for mounting 9434431. For a minute I didn't think it would fit, but them after jiggling around, it went in.

Whew... Of course, installing new pieces of rubber onto old pieces of steel took longer than removing all the old stuff. Just make sure to use plenty of silicone spray. Wipe down and brush off as much rust as you can. Spray some more silicone in there. And if you need to stretch the rubber hangers, try sticking a three inch 3/8 extension into the middle of the rubber hangers. Doing that gave me just enough clearance to slip them on. While under the car I noticed that the muffler was hanging from one about-to-break rubber hanger. Luckily I bought all four when I placed my order. So I replaced them all. They're good to go another 18 years!

One thing that happened: our car no longer makes that incredibly loud sound at 3k RPMS! I was going to replace the exhaust with something aftermarket just until I could do it the right way in the Spring. (I figured the noise was coming from that...) I am going to hold off on that. I wonder how many of us think exhaust noises are coming from broken mufflers and cats and not broken rubber hangers...

It might've pinch a cracked seam or split back into place from the new parts. Don't discount the exhaust tone just yet as being fixed.

A little. It sure takes elbow grease to stretch out those rubbers!

I know... This exhaust, exhaust manifold,cat, and 02 sensors need to be replaced, especially to improve gas mileage and to prevent any backpressure! But if that crazy noise at 3K rpms is going to go away, I'm going to count my blessings! I was going to get an aftermarket cat welded in there, along with whatever sections need to be replaced, this week to tide us over till the Spring when I could tackle the exhaust manifold job. But I'm going to put the job off till the Spring. I have some muffler tape I might put around one of the seams that's been a little drippy. I'm sure it'll last a few days.

One more thing I'd like to point out... man, it's so rewarding to work on these cars. I was able to do this job without putting the car on jackstands. The car was simply on the ground. I really love that about our cars.

Sorry for lifting such an old post, but I see OP is still on the forum, I hope you can answer a question for me!

Would I be right in saying that part number 9470686 is an all-in-one hanger that replaces both the old hanger ("hook" in VIDA) 3547625 and the mounting plate ("bracket" in VIDA) 9434431 that goes between that and the chassis?

Also, this is on a saloon / sedan? Mine is an estate 850R, I'm surprised they're the same.

EDIT: Also, was FCP Euro wrong for recommending 2 bolts? I see only 1 in your fitted photo.

Just bumping this because I feel morally superior for checking my hangers yesterday, plus if I can get a thread about a plate and two bolts to three pages , Erik’s life will be complete.
