1998 s70 t5 EVAP P0445

Hell All... I'm trying to eliminate a check engine light on a 1998 volvo s70 t5... The code is PO445. I've done the usual.. replaced the gas cap and repaired some questionable vacuum lines under the hood... I then went to check the j-hose by the passenger rear tire...... I slide under the car and it's not there... No charcoal canister... nothing... Fuel filter is there and next to the fuel filter is a check valve... covered in dirt... I has a broken line... So i remove the part to clean and get a number... It's a Chrysler part... 04091... I'm not really sure what the deal here is... did some one try to bypass the evap system... Has any one encountered this before...

Nevermind... I guess on the t5 the charcoal canister is up front... Still trying ti figure ou wht the chrysler check valve is on the car... I guess it was a band aid fix by a previous owner....

Band aid for a weak fuel pump.

The canister is under the driver side front fender. Lots of threads on this in the Repair database with pictures

My suggestion of a good place to check... For me this code came on in my 99’ s70 GLT and it ended up being an emission system hose, about a half an inch in diameter that runs between the exhaust (header?) and the engine, it was literally falling apart. It was split down the entire run of the hose. I think this hose is a common culprit because its location exposes it to aggressive heat cycles, and tends to deteriorate faster than others. But its easy to miss at first because it’s behind something. If you pop the hood its easily accessible from above, its under the exhaust (header?) that’s in front of the engine. Unfortunately you cannot purchase just that one hose, you have to purchase the whole hose assembly. Ill link the part.

I was actually able to wrap the entire hose in electrical tape and it made the check engine light go off, but this is a temporary fix as the electrical tape will deteriorate quickly exposed to that heat. But this will work if you have to get it inspected within a few weeks.

I fund the same hose split the entire length on my 99 T5 S70. Should point out that it is under the INTAKE manifold on the front of the engine. I was abl to fabricate several of those hoses from locally available fuel lines hose, but some might need to be bought. I found these while replacing the PCV system. Also found, for those doing that job, that the orifice in the banjo connector was completely blocked with hardened oil gunk that took some real effort to open up. Check that banjo or your other work is wasted.

Check out any and all hoses connected to the charcoal canister. Depending on the year and emission code, the canister may be behind the fender or under the car near the fuel filter.

Also a good opportunity to upgrade to the newer check valve style banjo bolt, PN 31325709.

Pretty sure the '98 doesn't have that banjo connector. Didn't think that came in until the later style intake in '99.

Correct (banjo bolt starts with 1999- turbos, NA don't have them until P2)

the hard line splitting is rare. Its much more common to have failed/split rubber parts on the EVAP, so examine those first.

A smoke test is the fast way to find all the leaks; there are often more than one.

True, I was thrown off by his PCV comment haha (though it's still good info, it's a good idea to install the updated bolt). No need to worry about that awful banjo bolt on the '98.
