Ridiculously Inexpensive Stereo for your P80

Post by Eddystone »

Clearly this will not be everyone's cup of tea, but when my V70 816 head unit went south, I bought one of these on a lark for about $45 from Amazon. It's a dual DIN 7" touchscreen display with Bluetooth, AUX, and USB inputs. It comes with a backup camera! It comes with a standard remote and one that attaches pretty neatly to the steering wheel. Support Android and iPhone. For Android, it will mirror whatever is displayed on your phone, so you could even watch videos on it.

The amazing thing is that everything I have tried works, and it sounds at least as good as the 816 unit. Bought a standard Metra adapter to hook it up. No issues. You have to remove the standard Volvo "mounting grooves" from the radio space, but then it fits in fine with about 1/16" gap an the bottom. It is very short and lightweight, and I just wedged it in with some of the high density foam it is packaged in. All of the settings are menu driven.

I don't know how long this is going to continue to function. The main control is the volume knob which feels a little iffy but may last forever.

As I said, this will not be the audiophile's first choice, but if you want t be able to interface your phone (especially Android) talk hands-free, play whatever music you have and listen to audio books, this works. You might even want to buy it as a temporary unit while you save up for that $700 unit you really want.

NO GUARANTEES. I compared features and functions and bought this on impulse, but it is performing like a champ, and I installed it in about 30 minutes. I combined the two antenna inputs with a y-cable I described in another post, and reception has been no problem with the "window wire" antennas in my V70.

Again, NO GUARANTEES, but if you are on a very tight budget with no tunes and driving with one hand while you talk on your mobile phone, this might works for you until you win the lottery.

(Use an oscillating saw tool to remove the Volvo "mounting grooves." It takes 5 minutes and does a nice, clean job. My tool is a Harbor Freight $20 tool.)
