Water leaking in upper driver's side corner

Post by Houandrew »

When it rains heavily water is leaking in the corner right about the driver’s side where the headliner meets the windshield. Windshield was replaced many years ago and mechanic said it looked as though it wasn’t sealed properly. However the wetness is traveling toward the back of the car. I noticed on the outside above that area under the metal the black “weather strip” is loose. Could the water be coming in from there? Also i put silicon Which i have read is bad in the corner of the windshield from the outside and it still leaks. Please help!

Are you sure that's where it's coming in? Or does it look like it's trailing from somewhere else (like the sunroof)? The sunroof drains get clogged pretty often, and it's possible that water is getting into the car through there.

I haven’t done a sunroof test. But on the outside of the car on the edge the length of the cars is a strip. The rubber toward the front on the outside of the car is broke near where the leak appears inside. I ran water over that and it got wet inside. Hard to believe that that would be the only thing that originally kept water out. How can i seal that properly? Nervous about using silicon? Any ideas. Or can that entire stripping mechanism have to be replaced?

Sunroof is well known to leak there, especially if the sunroof drains are clogged, just FYI.

There are some clips that hold that strip onto the roof. The clips screw into holes that are normally sealed up with silicone, that may be the problem. If you want to re-seal under the strips you can just carefully pull up the strip starting at the windshield end, it will unsnap. Check the clips that it snaps into. When you are done, push the strips back into the clips. Work carefully if you do this, you don't want to ruin the strips.

FYI
Those strips are very thin aluminum and will kink from normal handling if you lift anywhere but at the clip. Use a flat plastic tool to lift it out of the clip so you don't have to do it from inches away, which will cause it to buckle.
