C30 1.8 feels slow.!!

Post by Liason »

I picked up a 2007 c30 1.8. It’s a good little car. Anyway coming from an Audi S4 everything feels slow now but this c30 feels really slow. My brother in law mechanic checked it over and gave it a scan and said no stored fault codes. Got a full service spark plugs, air filter the lot. It has 100,000 miles and full service history etc but I notice that it seems very slow to rev down and not to quick to rev up either. It’s a Mazda/ford engine in this thing right? I sort of expect it to be more responsive. Feels a little like a non turbo diesel to me. If I park up and give the throttle a quick blip it pretty much does nothing until I am already combing off the power. Then it seems to rev down really slow. I thought most modern cars use fuel cut off these days so I would expect revs to drop quicker. I don’t have another c30 to compare it too. Maybe it’s all in my head but not sure how test if the car is ok. Guess I could try a 0-60 and see how close it is to it’s reviewed time back in the day

It is a Mazda L engine (B4184S11). Output is only 125hp @ 6000 RPM, 122 lb⋅ft of torque at 4250 rpm.

As per the google search, it is a low output non-turbo gasoline engine. Since there are no codes it sounds like it may be just performing normally. I also don't know what's going on with the revs, I would try the forum page here that is devoted to the C30 viewforum.php?f=25.

I just picked up an 07 S40, 2.4i and I feel the same way (I'm coming from a 98 S70, N/A). I suppose if it's more efficient that's all that matters... (I wish I didn't have a check engine light though...)

Some time ago, before I got my 01 v70 base (same power as the 98 v/s70), I test drove an 08 s40 2.4i and it was pretty darn slow and a rough driving experience. It felt cheap. At that time I was driving my 09 chevy impala LT, which was already slow and cheap.

I imagine the feel is because Volvo switched to all Ford Motors suspension components for this year of cars... I love our S40. But mostly because it's the last 5-speed I'll ever have... Now this leaking sunroof... :(
