Hi,
My 850 continues to have two intermittent issues. First is the “TRACS off” light is on and I randomly have no speedometer / odometer. One day it works and the next it doesn’t, but the TRACs off light is continuous.
Second, it’s got intermittent misfiring / stumbling on acceleration. My mechanic said one day when it wouldn’t start that it had no spark for several hours, then it just turned on no problems later in the day. He said check the crank position sensor and the cam position sensors, as they are likely the culprit. The fuel pump relay, ignition, distributor cap and all wires are new.
I pulled some parts off of my 1998 V70 base last night, hoping I can transfer some of these to the 96 850.
The crank sensor from the 850 is all black plastic and says “Siemens, Made in France” on it and I don’t see a Volvo part number. Some internet searches seem to confirm that this is the correct part for the 850, so say it’s not.
I also pulled the cam position sensor, and I feel pretty confident this should be plug and play on the 850.
I also pulled the Ate ABS module from the V70. I never had a problem with TRACs not working in that car.
I haven’t started pulling the 850 apart yet because I want to confirm these items would transfer safely. The V70, for all its other problems had no issues with TRACs, stalling or hesitation. If I can use these parts great, but if I have to buy new ones I will.
I’m attaching some pics of the parts I pulled from the V70, let me know what you think.
Trying to confirm part compatibility 70 series vs 850

Pretty sure if both cars have TRACS, that '98 ABS module should work on your '96.
Cam position sensor should swap, as well.

you can check the volvo webstore, and FCP Euro's database is pretty handy. Search the part from one model, write down its part number, search the other car and compare the two parts. If they are different interchange numbers they are different parts.

You can check the ABS module part number for compatible part numbers on Matty Moo's website at Mid-West ABS.
Check the cam sensor wire is not routed near the distributor. When they are the signal gets masked by the distributor and cuts out the engine.

Hey everyone, so now I’m a little more confused about the ABS module.
While I have the TRACs off light on, at no point does an ABS light even show up on my dashboard, not even at vehicle start when all lights light up.
Checking the OEM manual that came with the car it shows a BRAKE, PARKING BRAKE and ABS light, but I have never seen the ABS light light up once.
I’m wondering - do all 1996 850s have ABS or was it an option? I’m thinking if my car has TRACs it must have ABS, but is that correct?
I’m wondering if the ABS light lit up awhile ago and a previous owner pulled the lightbulb from the cluster. Only to have the problem then expand into the no TRACs issue which they didn’t bother pulling the bulb on.
Also testing the CPS and the CS with a multi-meter on ohms at 2k setting what would acceptable resistance ranges be for these sensors? I’ve pulled readings on the sensors I’ve already pulled from the V70, but I’d like to test the sensors on the 850 in the car and only replace the one that’s broken.
The wierd thing is I’m not getting a check engine light for any of these issues: intermittent no speedo and the little misfiring it’s doing when it gets warmed up.

Sorry I didn't see this thread previously: There is no question, all three of those parts (cam and crank sensors, that ABS in the pic) swap between your 98 V70 and your 96 850, no problem. They are exact matches.
The ABS bulb must be out, you are correct. I would definitely swap in that ABS module, as a troubleshooting method.
I'd also assume the cam and crank sensors are good, given that the V70 was working fine. But replace them one at a time if you're going to do that. It would be unusual for either them to show misfires, for the record, but worth a try because it is trivial to swap/test.
I've never tested the CPS, don't have an answer there.

If you don’t see an idiot light when
you first turn the key, but haven’t
started the car yet, the lamp’s inop.
For whatever reason.

That’s what I figured and I did that earlier and the car clearly has an ABS light but it never lights up at any time, nor does the Service Light. I’m assuming both remained lit for a long time and burnt out or were removed by a prior owner.
That said is it safe to assume all base 96 850 vehicles did have ABS as standard equipment? I checked with Matt from MidWest and while he confirmed the part number photographed above from my 98 V70 base would work in an 96 850, but I assumed and think I told him that they were both ABS cars, without knowing about this light not working

Yes, ABS was standard equipment on every 1996 850.
You can also just look under the hood of your 850: is there a rectangular, silver ABS pump on the master cylinder with black plastic ABS control module? (Yes, there is!)
